Des Bishop on China's Comedy Boom and Censorship

Stand-up comedy is booming across China, trailing only cinema as the country's second-largest theater category, according to state media. Many credit American comic Des Bishop with sparking the trend over a decade ago after he moved to Beijing, learned Mandarin from scratch, and built a stand-up routine that helped lay the groundwork for today’s scene. Bloomberg’s Stephen Engle met with Bishop in Hong Kong to discuss the industry's evolution. (Source: Bloomberg)

How FLIC Trust Scores workFLIC Trust Scores turn community ratings into a 0–100 signal about how readers assess a story. Fake News votes lower the score, while Liberal, Conservative, and Independent classifications support it. The formula also rewards a balanced split between Liberal and Conservative ratings instead of treating one political viewpoint as automatically more trustworthy. Scores can change as more people vote and represent community judgment, not a factual verdict or substitute for reading the original reporting. Learn more about how FLIC works.
